Frequently Asked Questions

Will my insurance cover prosthetic services?

Our healthcare staff is highly skilled in understanding the complex health insurance industry and can help you figure out what is covered and process your claims as quickly as possible. If you are experiencing financial difficulties, you can apply for financial assistance through Sky's hardship application. Please speak with the Sky office to learn more about how to apply.

Do I need a physician's prescription for a prosthesis?

Sky will contact your PCP and insurance company to obtain the required documentation and authorization, but you could accelerate this process by calling your PCP as well. You may need to complete an appointment with your PCP before Sky delivers your prosthesis. The three key documentation requirements are: Clinical Notes, Standard Written Order, and Authorization.

How long does it take to make a prosthesis?

Every Sky prosthetic device is custom-made over 3-5 appointments. Most patients prefer to complete these appointments over 3-8 weeks. After an evaluation appointment and reviewing your medical history, personal rehabilitation ambition, and consulting with your primary care provider (PCP), your prosthetist will propose a set of device components that best matches your needs.

How much does a prosthetic leg cost?

Prosthetic leg costs can vary greatly depending on the patient's specific needs. It is common to see prices between $8,000 - $20,000, but athletes can require components that cost over $100,000. In Sky's experience, most amputees are best served by a combination of parts that cost no more than $20,000, with many under $12,000. For an insured patient, the patient's personal responsibility varies based on the insurance plan. It is most common for Sky patients to owe less than $3,000 personally.
